Problems with executive function may impact language skills, academics, and social skills

Some signs of executive function difficulty:

  • difficulty planning a project

  • difficulty comprehending how much time a project will take to complete

  • struggling to tell a story (verbally or in writing)

  • trouble communicating details in an organized, sequential manner

  • difficulty with the mental strategies involved in memorization and retrieving information from memory

  • difficulty initiating activities or tasks, or generating ideas independently

  • difficulty retaining information while doing something with it; e.g., remembering a phone number while dialing.

Some components of executive function training:

- Learn about thinking/planning ahead

- Learn to use strategies such as self-talk, visualization, problem solving, and prediction

- Learn self-monitoring and managing the use of time

- Learn strategies that can save time
