Speech, language, and swallowing disorders can have many causes, such as: brain damage, muscle weakness, stroke, Parkinson's disease, cancer, vocal fold damage, respiratory weakness, and dementia.  It is also possible that patients can exhibit symptoms when there is no known cause.

Symptoms of Speech/Language disorders include:

 

  • Taking frequent pauses when talking

  • Repeating sounds

  • Disorting sounds when talking

  • Sounding like speech is slurred

  • Difficulty understanding others

  • Difficulty following directions

  • Difficulty expressing thoughts

 

Voice disorders symptoms include:

 

  • Hoarse vocal quality

  • Abnormal voice loudness

  • Weak sounding voice

We can help you improve cognitive-linguistic skills such as:

 

  • Organization

  • Problem solving

  • Money management

  • Safety awareness

  • Short or long-term memory

  • Planning

  • Attention

Symptoms of Swallowing disorders include:

 

  • Coughing during/after eating or drinking

  • Wet/gurgly sounding voice

  • Extra time/effort needed to chew or swallow

  • Recurring pneumonia

  • Weight loss or dehydration
